Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain, particularly in patients with arthritis. However, a growing body of information indicates that NSAIDs may be a major cause of upper gastrointestinal ulcer disease. Dr Silverstein reviews the association between NSAIDs and gastroduodenal ulcers, as well as current data about prophylaxis against NSAID-induced ulceration.
