摘要：

Historically, public health has been one of the most, if not the most, successful of the health fields in terms of its impact on the quality and quantity of life of populations. This success notwithstanding, policy makers and the public are largely uninformed about public health. This article discusses the need for a greater understanding of public health as well as strategies for achieving greater recognition.
