POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY FOR STUDY OF INFORMATION-PROCESSING IN THE BASAL GANGLIA

摘要
We described the difference in pathophysiology of the basal ganglia diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy, obtained from the studies with positron emission tomography (PET). Mainly due to the poor spatial resolution of PET images, measurement of cerebral glucose metabolism alone was not sufficient to analyze basal ganglia dysfunction with PET. However, combination of PET techniques for measuring dopaminergic presynaptic and postsynaptic functions with the method for measuring glucose metabolism enabled us to get a closer insight into the pathophysiology of the basal ganglia diseases, evaluating the over-all neuronal activities and selective neuronal activities that are regulated by dopaminergic system. These analyses may contribute to elucidating the mechanisms of information processing in the basal ganglia.
