The article looks into the process of creation of the notion of "national heroine" and is focused on the example of Joan of Arc. The author analyses the features of liberal French historiography of the 19th century, its origins and its main topics, which were demonstrated in the historical writings of R. de Chateaubriand, A. Thierry, J.-Ch.-L. Simonde de Sismondi, Th. Lavalee, J. Michelet, J. Quicherat and H. Martin.
