N-OXIDE COMPLEXES OF VANADIUM(4) CHLORIDE

Vanadium(IV) chloride forms 1:2 adducts, VCl4·2L, with 2:6 lutidine N-oxide and other N-oxides of the type Z-C5H4NO where Z = H, 4-Me, 4-Cl, 4-NO2 and 2-Me. 1:1 adducts are formed with dipyridyl N, N′-dioxide, 4-benzyloxypyridine N-oxide, and 1,10-phenanthroline N,N′-dioxide, Exposure of certain of these to moist air results in the production of the corresponding hydrated oxovanadium(IV) compounds VOCl2L2xH2O. The properties of these compounds have been studied and their reflectance spectra, infrared spectra and room temperature magnetic moments are recorded. © 1969.
