A total of 46 varieties of Japanese two-rowed barley and their parents which were introduced from foreign countries were examined in allelic variation at the Ga2 locus for distorted segregation. Out of them, only 5 varieties carried the Ga2 allele, while the others possessed the ga2 allele. In the pedigree of Japanese two-rowed barley varieties, Ko A and Ko 1-18 were first detected to possess the Ga2 allele. And, the allele was transmitted from Ko 1-18 to Ko C, Kanto Nakate Gold and Kanto Nijo 2. However, the Ga2 allele of their varieties and Ko A could not be transferred to their progenies. The Ga2 allele was completely eliminated in advanced varieties, resulting that all of them carried the same ga2 allele.
