A detailed study of the magnitude of the archaeomagnetic field in Central France between 100bc and ad 300 has revealed rapid changes in the magnitude of the field. These changes resolve the apparent conflict of evidence from thermoluminescence and archaeomagnetism. Part of this study involved using a new combined thermal and alternating field (af) demagnetizing technique for determining the magnitude of the archaeomagnetic field from magnetically ‘hard’ specimens.
