The (Rare-earth)Ba2Cu3Ox materials are high-temperature superconductors, regardless of the moment J of the rare-earth ion, provided it is in the +3 valence state. Doping of the Ba-site of NdBa2Cu3Ox with J=0 La+3 has only a minor effect on the superconductivity, while J=9/2 Nd+3 on the Ba-site breaks pairs and destroys superconductivity. The facts that (i) Nd+3 between the cuprate planes has almost no effect and (ii) Nd+3 between a plane and a chain destroys superconductivity indicate that the superconductivity originates in the chain layers.
