摘要
For the past decade, the South Dakota Archaeological Research Center, through the initiative of Robert Alex, has maintained a working relationship with the University of Tennessee to analyze human skeletal remains. This paper outlines the history of contract skeletal analysis and the reburial of archaeological remains in South Dakota. Because skeletons are now analyzed before reburial, much new information has been gained. One such case is a possible dwarf skeleton from the Twin site (39BF206). These remains indicate that major congenital anomalies occurred in prehistoric South Dakota and allow us to suggest cultural interpretations concerning infanticide and altrusitic behavior.
