Decay of bacteriorhodopsin photocycle M-intermediate is retarded by Cd(ClO4)2 according to the prediction for the constants of cadmium ion hydrolysis. The retardation is more efficient than by CdCl2. The weakening of inhibition by anions (in particular, Cl- in the case of cadmium) is, possibly, due to the lowering of the cation activity in solution. Thus, the quantitative comparison of the pH dependence of M412 decay retardation by cations requires the complete lack of anions capable of binding cations.
