RESEARCH ON CLOUDS AND PRECIPITATION .2. PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Based on an invited paper given at the annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society, Anaheim, CA, January-February 1989, the author begins with a look at the ways in which various parts of the meteorological research community have viewed clouds and how these views have changed in recent times. The emphasis has shifted to measurements in real clouds using in situ and remote sensing techniques, and to the numerical modelling of the processes associated with the formation of clouds and precipitation. This review also mentions some of the notable milestones in cloud and precipitation research since about 1950, and outlines some of the outstanding problems. -after Author
