摘要
Antibacterial activity (in vitro) of different extracts (water, ethanol, chloroform and petroleum-ether 60-80-degrees) of Piper chaba stem were studied. The ethanol extract was found to be most active of all the extracts. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of dried ethanol extract against Shigella dysenteriae, Vibrio cholerae and Bacillus subtilis were found to be 100, 75 and 100-mu-g/ml respectively. Thin layer chromatographic (TLC) analyses of the ethanol extract revealed the presence of a known alkaloid piplartine in the ethanol extract. The alkaloid also showed prominent antibacterial activity against the above mentioned pathogens.
