A technique for simulating the impulse magnetisation of permanent magnets is presented. The method involves the simultaneous solution of the differential equation governing the capacitor-discharge/ magnetising fixture circuit and the non-linear diffusion equation governing the transient electromagnetic field. It enables the distribution of magnetisation throughout the magnet to be estimated, a pre-requisite for predicting the subsequent magnetic field distribution following the decay of the impulse magnetising field. The technique is applied to the study of factors which influence the magnetisation of multi-pole fields on sintered NdFeB magnets. © 1990 IEEE
