In a programme Of testing started with the intention of establishing the relationship between the microstructure of glass-ceramics and their resistance to abrasion it became apparent that the abrasion rates were strongly affected by the length of the specimens. Short specimens exhibited much higher abrasion rates than the longer ones, indicating the importance Of keeping all the specimens to the same geometry. The abrasion resistance of Silceram glass-ceramics was found to be insensitive to variations in their microstructure but the volume loss due to abrasion by coarse silica sand was greater than that for finer silica sand.
