MACH NUMBER OF A COMETARY BOW SHOCK

摘要
Analysis of flow stability of a magnetized plasma being loaded with new cometary ions shows that linear magnetosonic perturbations become hydrodynamically unstable when the magnetosonic Mach number becomes less than 2 due to deceleration of the plasma stream. It is suggested that the cometary bow shock forms for this reason.
