The Vought Aero Products Division (VAPD) of LTV Aerospace and Defense Co. has adopted a strategy whereby tactical investments associated with specific business opportunities are linked together to achieve the strategic goal of a multiproduct factory of the future. Using results of the ICAM 1105 Project's architecture for a factory of the future, VAPD has begun systematic implementation of flexible automation in key areas. Computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) links these automation initiatives to each other and to existing manufacturing resource planning (MRP) systems. VAPD has successfully implemented one flexible automation system, the Flexible Manufacturing Cell (FMC), and is currently in the process of implementing two more. These projects provide a unique insight into the process by which such systems evolve.
