摘要
The 21st century is becoming a turning point for electrochemical processes as the advantages of efficient, clean, flexible, and sustainable electrochemical systems become increasingly valued by society. As these trends are projected into the future, a clear opportunity exists for hydrogen to play a major role as a clean, energy carrying intermediate Success of H2@Scale efforts will result in decreasing costs and increased implementation of hydrogen in many major energy sectors, addressing key issues that include grid resiliency, energy security, employment, manufacturing, environmental benefits, and innovation. Hydrogen can cleanly and cheaply couple with multiple power generation inputs, while also servicing all of society’s energy demands, including grid, industrial, and transportation. Achieving the H2@Scale vision will be greatly facilitated by research advances that focus on materials and systems improvements, many of which will be electrochemical in nature. In this way electrochemists will play a central role in enabling H2@Scale, and providing a pathway for society to a clean, economic, and sustainable energy system.
