Pediatric Hip Disorders: Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis and Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease

• Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) may present with classic history and physical examination findings that may aid the pediatrician in making an early diagnosis. • Pediatricians should refer patients with abnormal physical examination findings, abnormal imaging findings, or persistent hip, knee, or groin pain despite normal imaging findings to a pediatric orthopedist. • Based on strong research evidence, there are adult consequences of SCFE and LCPD, including chondrolysis and secondary osteoarthritis resulting in a need for total hip arthroplasty.
