A synthesis of atrolactic acid methyl ether, C6H5C(OCH3)(CH3)C02H, in 97 ± 2% enantiomeric excess based on 10-mercaptoisoborneol [readily available by lithium aluminum hydride reduction of (+)-camphor-10-sulfonyl chloride from natural (+)-camphor] as the chiral auxiliary substance is described. © 1979, American Chemical Society.
