The Average Power Laser Experiment (APLE) is a 10-mu-m FEL experiment that is configured as a single accelerator master oscillator power amplifier (SAMOPA). The performance of the device is dependent upon high brightness electron beam transport through bends, bunchers, two wigglers, and intervening magnetic matching sections. Electron beam transport simulations of the APLE layout are presented, and the various design trade-offs and underlying physics of the APLE device is discussed.
