摘要
Objective: Established methods for the quantitative analysis of faecal fat, nitrogen and water are time consuming and require unpopular handling. We aimed to evaluate the potential and precision of near-infrared reflectance analysis (NIRA) for the measurement of these routine parameters. Design: A total of 212 individuals both with and without various malabsorption syndromes were studied. Methods: Excretions of faecal fat analysed by the van de Kamer method, faecal nitrogen by Kjeldahl's method and faecal water by stool weight estimated before and after lyophilization were cross-validated with NIRA. Results: For all three parameters, the comparison of conventional methods with NIRA showed a linear regression with correlation coefficients for faecal fat, nitrogen and water of 0.934, 0.918 and 0.944, respectively. Coefficients of variation for NIRA were 1.28-2.96%. Conclusions: These results indicate that NIRA is a powerful new approach for the diagnosis of malabsorption syndromes and that it can replace the conventional and inconvenient methods of van de Kamer and Kjeldahl.
