This paper describes two types of free-space photonic switches, a cascaded-beam-shifter-type switch and a holographic switch. A cascaded-beam-shifter-type compact 1, 024-input-256-output optical concentrator was fabricated using liquid-crystal polarization controller arrays and calcite birefringent plates. Insertion loss of less than 10 dB for the 8-stage configuration, and the basic operation of the switch is confirmed. The operation of 1-input-64-output and 2-input-32-output holographic switching is also successfully demonstrated, using a liquid-crystal display. These free-space photonic switches are expected to be strong candidates for transparent, compact, large-scale switches with more than 1, 000 input ports.
