It has long been argued that Maxwell's equations cannot be exactly solved for nonlinear surface/interface TM modes. This short communication is intended to demonstrate that analytically exact solutions for nonlinear TM modes are possible. We have calculated the dispersion relation and the power carried by the nonlinear surface polaritons (NLSP) propagating along an interface between an optically (Kerr-like) nonlinear and a linear media. We emphasize that the present treatment is absolutely free from any approximation. © 1990 IOP Publishing Ltd.
