The basic suppositions of several modes of enquiry are examined emphasising the enduring questions asked by practitioners of each method, and the persistent problems of data analysis and interpretation that have plagued both since their inception. The modes are worldwide cross-cultural analysis and continuous area cross-cultural analysis. -J.Clayton
