Factors influencing the efficiency of the photocatalytic oxygenation of two mustard simulants (2-chloroethyl methyl sulfide and 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide) on irradiated suspensions of TiO2 in aerated acetonitrile are described. Product analysis indicates that sulfoxide formation is the dominant process in acetonitrile and that TiO2 is a much better photocatalyst than SnO2, ZrO2, or ZnO. © 1990 J.C. Baltzer A.G.
