摘要
The progress in optical communication systems has been rapid over the past few years as the solutions to optical component problems have been found. The characteristics of optical fibers and devices are reviewed and their application to system design discussed. A number of systems already operational, together with more advanced systems still at the laboratory stage, are described. The direction that work is taking to produce a second generation of optical transmission systems is outlined.
