Prerenal, glomerular, tubulo-interstitial and postrenal diseases lead to specific composition of urinary proteins. Analysis of those excreted proteins frequently enables diagnosis. SDS-gel-electrophoresis seems to be the obvious method as the whole spectrum of urinary proteins is detected and presented. Because of the in our laboratory optimated silver-staining [4], the matrix between the protein bands remains completely translucent. Therefore after consecutive laserdensitometry the peaks rise from the bottom line and allow semiquantitative identification of all urinary proteins at once. Even with urinary protein concentrations below 50 mg/l we find typical densitograms which lead to prima vista diagnosis. For documentation the protein patterns are electronically stored during laserdensitometry. The densitograms may be presented to fit into each other, which simplifies comparison of different patterns.
