Ancient schwannoma of the nose: Case report and literature review

The schwannoma is a tumor that takes form from the nerve sheath. The ancient type is a rare subtype of schwannomas. A 66-year-old woman presented to our otolaryngology department with a mass situated on the right side of her nose. A contrast enhanced maxillofacial MRI scan showed a lobulated lesion with an area of linear calcification. The lesion was removed via surgical procedure; the resulting histologic evaluation of the lesion revealed an ancient schwannoma. Recovery was recorded as unremarkable. Current literature indicates that ancient schwannomas can be found in different parts of the body: however, there have been no reports in which the schwannoma presents on the external surface of the nose. Our report entails the case of a unique, slow growing benign mass that yielded to be an ancient schwannoma on the nose.
