Intracellular galactose oxidase (EC.1.1.3.9) was purified from a mutant (DD09) of the original enzyme-producing fungal strain Dactylium dendroides. This mutant strain has an impairment in the enzyme secretion. The enzyme is a protein of 70kDa containing 4.5% of neutral sugar residues of which 73% are resistent to beta - elimination. Unlike the wild type, the enzyme showed a higher affinity for dihydroxyacetone than for galactose.
