A chemical method to determine Triazine-based pesticides is described. It is based on the reaction between Triazines and Pyridin in presence of 9N KOH. The Triazines are first heated to 100-degrees-C with 70% aqueous Pyridin. Subsequently the homogeneous mixture is treated with the same volume of the alkali whereby the Pyridine layer separates out. Measurement of Tansmission is carried out with the Pyridine layer at 355 nm. A linear correlation of the Transmission concentration is obtained. The method has been found to function with water samples containing from 0.0001 to 0.001 mg/l Atrazine. Extraction procedures with solvent as well as solid phase are also described. Further work to adapt the principle for continuous monitoring is in progress.
