摘要
The elementary mechanism of cross-slip is carefully analysed and the importance of the core radius is emphasized. It is shown that elastic calculations cannot be accurate enough to give more than an order of magnitude of the activation enthalpy of cross-slip. Furthermore, the activation volume is shown to be very small, which means that cross-slip is not very strongly stress aided. These results are applied to the analysis of the variation in tau-III, the stress at maximum hardening, with temperature. The latter is shown to vary rapidly with respect to temperature between T(c)/2 and T(c). T(c) is shown to be of the right order of magnitude.
