EFFECT OF NEONATAL THYMECTOMY ON GROWTH KINETICS OF A VIRUS-INDUCED RENAL SARCOMA OF RAT

Growth kinetics of Polyoma virus induced renal sarcomas in normal and neonatally thymectomized Wistar rats are compared. Both groups of animals show an exponential tumour growth from the 20th to the 50th day of life. Thymectomized rats have a significant reduction of tumour doubling time (76 hr) compared to non-thymectomized rats (110 hr). The main parameters of tumour growth, cell cycle time, proliferative fraction and cell loss rate are determined at the 30th and 50th day after virus infection of the animals. The reduction of doubling time in tumours of thymectomized rats is due to an increase of the proliferative fraction despite increased cell loss rates. The extent of cell loss in the resting and cycling cell compartment is specified for both groups of rats. © 1978.
