摘要
A birefringent element placed within a Fabry-Perot cavity enables the direction of change of electron density to be unambiguously identified. The only necessary condition is that the birefringent element be oriented such that the plane of polarization of the incident beam is at an angle other than π/4 to that of the ordinary ray. The operation and design of the interferometer is considered and some electron density measurements in a Z-pinch discharge are given.
