FROM WORLD CRISIS TO LOCAL DEVELOPMENT. BRIEF REPORT OF A PROJECT OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHEOLOGY ON THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE OLD BASE OF SOVIET NUCLEAR MISSILES IN SANTA CRUZ DE LOS PINOS, CUBA

contemporary archaeology project approaching the "Missile Crisis" (1962), and more specifically the former Soviet nuclear missile base at Santa Cruz de los Pinos, Cuba. The project is a cooperation between Swedish and Cuban historians, anthropologists and archaeologists and it shows that it is possible to complement the meta-narrative of the crisis with material and immaterial remains and memories in a manner where the crisis is approached and explained "from below". The project has also developed into to a study of how the cultural heritage of the former missile base at Santa Cruz de los Pinos can be used by the local museum in San Cristcbal to foster a sustainable development at the local level since the public in various ways are invited to participate in the development of this cultural heritage.
