Die Klage der Kaiserin (The plaint of the empress) is the only film directed by Pina Bausch. She realized this movie in the late Eighties, with her company, the Tanztheater Wuppertal, shooting especially in outdoors: we can see the wood and the countryside, the suburbs and the city. The dancers invest Wuppertal, the town where they work every day, with their poetic and their scenic characters; their actions have an illogical and alienating effect because they are totally in contrast to the places, the time, the music. Urban and rural spaces are changed and charged with a dramatic sense while, at the same time, they affect the interior landscape of the dancers, who are absorbed in it, and often lost in it.
