THE FLOCCULATION OF NONAQUEOUS, STERICALLY-STABILIZED LATEX DISPERSIONS IN THE PRESENCE OF FREE POLYMER

Depletion flocculation data are described for three types of non-aqueous, sterically-stabilized dispersions: polystyrene latex particles carrying terminally-anchored polyethylene oxide chains in nitromethane; polystyrene particles carrying terminally-anchored polyisoprene particles in n-hexane; polyacrylonitrile particles stabilized by adsorbed polydimethylsiloxane/polystyrene/polydimethylsiloxane ABA block copolymers in n-hexane. With the first system the data are compared with similar dispersions in water, and hence the effect of solvency on depletion flocculation is discussed. The second systems are novel in that they are prepared by an anionic polymerization method, such that the stabilizing (grafted) polymer is identical to the added, free polymer. With the third system the effect of the coverage of the stabilizing polymer is discussed in relation to depletion flocculation.
