Protein synthesis by ribosomal preparations of the blowfly, Calliphora erythrocephala, has been measured in vitro in different developmental periods. There are two maxima, one at 1 to 2 days and one at 5 days after pupation. The polysomal profiles also show considerable changes; in 6- to 7-day-old larvae most of the particles are in the form of heavy polysomes, in later stages the reverse is seen. The protein/RNA quotients of the different preparations are high in the larvae, decrease 3 days after pupation and rise again 5 to 7 days after pupation. © 1968.
