MEASUREMENT OF BOUNDARIES BETWEEN 2-PHASE AND 3-PHASE REGIONS IN EMULSIFIED SYSTEMS BY TITRATION CALORIMETRY

摘要
This paper demonstrates how titration calorimetry can be used to precisely determine phase boundaries in multiphase systems containing emulsions. Transitions from two-phase regions to three-phase regions or from three-phase regions to two-phase regions are detected during titration as changes in the slope of heat evolved vs time. The method is more precise and rapid than conventional phase volume measurements. Since measurements are made with emulsions present, the method can be used to study industrially important systems containing relatively stable emulsions. Measurements on a surfactant/oil/water system and two surfactant/oil/brine systems gave compositional boundaries comparable to those obtained by phase volume experiments.
