A new and highly efficient synthetic method for the preparation of cellulose monoacetates (CMA) has been developed. The method is based on high-temperature metal-catalyzed or carboxylic acid promoted methanolysis of cellulose triacetate or cellulose diacetate. The method provides water-absorbent or water-soluble CMA depending upon the type of catalyst or promoter selected. Evidence is presented which demonstrates that, for cellulose monoacetates with a degree of substitution in the range 0.5-0.9, water solubility is determined by the molecular weight of the polymer and by the monomer composition of the cellulose acetate.
