THE CORROSION EVALUATION OF PAINTED AND ARTIFICIALLY DAMAGED PAINTED STEEL PANELS BY AC-IMPEDANCE MEASUREMENTS

The behaviour of some commercial paint systems after exposure to accelerated conventional corrosion tests was investigated by electrochemical impedance as a function of immersion time in a NaCl solution. The re-exposure test time in the NaCl solution was revealed as particularly important. Some precautions should be taken in the comparison of different paints behaviour, in particular with those having a high pigment content. In some cases, impedance measurements revealed that pigments or corrosion products have temporary effects that cannot be detected by visual observations. Impedance measurements on artificially damaged coatings and the evaluation of breakpoint frequencies permitted the behaviour of the pigments at the base of a pinhole to be followed.
