Vacant-site contrast observed in the field-ion images of Pt-Rh, Pt-Au and Au-Pd alloys is interpreted in terms of preferential evaporation of the solute atoms. Preferential retention of the solute atoms was observed in a Au-Pt alloy. These observations conflict with predictions based on a theory of image formation proposed by Southworth & Ralph (1969).
