Ferrography, developed over 10 years ago, has to date had restricted usage in the field of condition monitoring of diesel engines. A number of applications are illustrated where this technique has now been effectively utilized and reasons are also suggested for its restricted use in comparison with other existing techniques such as spectrographic oil analysis. Cases are also described where ferrography used in conjunction with spectroscopy has provided a powerful technique in the diesel engine condition monitoring field. © 1979.
