HOMOGENEOUS EXCHANGE OF IODINE WITH METHYL IODIDE IN SINGLE-PULSE SHOCK TUBE

The homogeneous gas-phase exchange of iodine with methyl iodide was studied in a single-pulse shock tube in the temperature range 870-1105 °K. Tracer quantities of the γ-ray emitter, 131I, were introduced in the iodine. The observed exchange rates were consistent with the mechanism M + I2 ⇌ 2I + M and I +CH3I ⇌ CH3 + I2 (where M is the inert carrier gas, argon), with a rate k1 = 1013.2 exp(-17.4 kcal/RT) cm3 mole-1 sec-1. © 1969, American Chemical Society.
