Abstract— The emission spectrum of the microsome‐mediated chemiluminescence of a proximate carcinogenic metabolite of benzo[a]pyrene, 7,8‐diol‐benzo[a]pyrene. has been measured with a wedge interference filter spectrometer calibrated with known chemiluminescent and bioluminescent reactions. This instrument has a noise equivalent signal at 490 nm (bandpass 24 nm) of 104 photon s‐1 at 20°C. Spectral and kinetic data indicate that the microsomal chemilurninescence of this metabolite is an exiplex chemiluminescence that proceeds through a dioxetane intermediate.
