DETECTION OF TRAPPED FLUX QUANTA IN SUPERCONDUCTING FILMS BY SCANNING A SQUID PICK-UP COIL

Trapped flux quanta have been detected by scanning a SQUID pick-up coil over a superconductor surface. The basic principle of this method is that the perpendicular component of the magnetic field near the superconductor surface vanishes because of the Meissner effect. On the other hand, the perpendicular component above trapped flux quanta will not vanish. Therefore when the coil scans over the surface, a change of PHI-0 in the flux through the coil is observed just above the trapped flux quantum. The advantages of this method are high sensitivity to flux trapped in superconductors and low sensitivity to external magnetic disturbances. These features are confirmed through experimentation. The experiment, performed with a superconducting film in liquid helium, shows that this method can detect flux quanta trapped in superconductors.
