Upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy is useful in diagnosing gastro-oesophageal reflux and providing long-term patient management. Endoscopy makes it possible to diagnose Barrett's oesophagus and treat complications associated with reflux, like oesophageal stenosis. More recently, endoscopy has been used to treat reflux disease, but the specific techniques have only been available in specialized centres and in the context of clinical studies.
