摘要
From detailed surveys of archaeological sites and the land in between, we can infer levels of ancient land-use intensity. In one area of northern Iraq ''off-site'' data-primarily artifact scatters and traces of ancient routes-can now be related to estimates of ancient population based upon the number of archaeological settlement sites. These strands of evidence suggest how a dispersed network of Chalcolithic villages (dated between 6000 and 3000 BC) developed into towns during the third millennium BC, and how the landscape became differentiated into zones of varying agricultural productivity.
