摘要
This chapter outlines the approaches to the design and fabrication of organic nonlinear optical materials. First, the relationships between chemical structure and the first molecular hyperpolarizability (beta) are described. Then, issues related to incorporation of these molecules into bulk materials with useful second-order susceptibilities, (chi((2))) are reviewed, in particular, crystalline and thin-film materials. We describe advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches in light of recent results.
