Intraspecific and Individual Variation of Mammals Hair in the State of Mexico: Implications in the Intraspecific Identification

摘要：

This research project determined the variation in dorsal guard hair among members of the same specie. Besides, the variation of a single member in different regions was also assessed. The measured factors were: total length, medulla diameter, as well as tonality pattern and medulla type. For the Intraspecific variation 530 dorsal guard hairs were assessed, taken from 53 different organisms. In spite of the length and diameter variation of the medulla, it was possible to carry out a successful identification of the organisms at a specific level, using the identification guide for terrestrial mammals - provided by Monroy-Vilchis and Rubio-Rodriguez-parting from guard hair; except from Canis latrans and Liomys irroratus. For the individual comparison 569 guard hairs, taken from 14 different species, were examined. There were some differences regarding total length, medulla diameter, and coloration. The medulla was the only constant factor.
