BLOAT IN CATTLE .31. EFFECT OF DIMETRIDAZOLE ON RUMEN CILIATE PROTOZOA OF DRY AND LACTATING COWS

Dimetridazole (1, 2-dimethyl-5-rutroimidazole) given as either “Emtryl” Soluble Powder or “Emtryl” Dispersible Powder can reduce or eliminate the rumen holotrich ciliate populations of dry and lactating cows, both stall-fed and grazing. There is no difference in the efficacy of the two formulations on an equivalent dose basis, but both are more effective in stall-fed animals. Dimetridazole is also active against the entodiniomorph ciliates and flagellates of the rumen, and multiple dosing with dimetridazole is an effective means of defaunating animals of their rumen protozoa. © 1969 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
